2023 SCHEDULE/RULES

[personal profile] wish_upon_a_meme is a relaxed December gifting event modeled on prompt memes and the dearly departed LJ comm [livejournal.com profile] insmallpackages. Here you can request not just fanworks for your fandoms, but book and music recs, holiday greetings, personal anecdotes, pics of people's flowers/cats/holiday decor… whatever you can think of that could go in a comment, you can request here!

SCHEDULE:
  • Dec 1 to Dec 31: Requests may be posted. Please do not post requests after this date.
  • Dec 1 to Jan 14: Fills may be posted.

HOW IT WORKS:

  • Find people’s requests to fill! You can fill requests anonymously or logged in. Fills may be posted here, or they may be posted elsewhere and linked in your comment. Fills must be publicly accessible, ie not on a locked journal, a tumblr that requires logging in to view, etc.
  • More than one person can fill the same request.
  • Please say thank you when someone fills one of your requests! You can reply anonymously or logged in. You may want to bookmark your requests so you can check later, or if you have a paid DW account you can use the tracking feature to get notifications.

Laptop reviews

(Anonymous) 2023-12-03 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love honest reviews of people's laptops, especially focused on durability/resilience - like how long it took before the battery started to wear out, what parts are failing, how it stands up to rough treatment, how easy it is to repair/maintain/upgrade, how flexible it was if you ended up using it for stuff other than what you bought it for, etc.

Here's some from my 1968 bartender's guide!!

Bent Nail
1 quart beef broth from bouillon
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
Vanilla beans to garnish
Combine bouillon and vanilla extract. Let stand at least one hour. Serve over ice cubes, garnish with vanilla beans. Makes about 8 servings.

Dolphin's Delight
4 oz clam juice
2 oz tomato juice
1/8 tsp celery salt
Pour juices over ice, add celery salt.

Sauerkraut Cocktail
1 tbps lemon juice
1/8 tsp caraway seeds
4 oz. sauerkraut juice
Combine lemon juice and caraway seeds in glass. Add ice cubes, then sauerkraut juice. Stir well.

(It also has the Bloody Shame, a bloody mary without the vodka, more often called a virgin mary these days; a Calypso Cola, a rum n' coke that uses 1 tsp rum extract instead of the rum; Mint Tulip, which is mint leaves + sugar/simple syrup + ginger ale; grapefruit highball, which replaces the whiskey with grapefruit juice; thin n' tonic, which is a gin n' tonic without the gin, garnish with lime; and one that uses homemade rhubarb syrup and ginger ale. But those first three are the ones I really want to try someday.)

One I actually enjoy: jolaol is an Icelandic holiday drink that's 1/2 malt soda and 1/2 orange soda. If you can't get Egils brand Malt and Apelsin, whatever malt soda is available on your international shelves will work.)

Acer Swift 3: got it online from CostCo. I am having to use the on-screen keyboard for the following keys:
  • a
  • s
  • Capslock
  • Delete
  • /
  • 1
  • 0
  • -
  • Up and Down arrows
  • Volume Increase Button
Thankfully, it is still under warranty, so I will be sending it in for repairs as soon as the semester ends.

I didn't like the animation style too much the first time I saw the trailer, but I'm willing to give it a try. Thank you

I don't speak French, and based on my cursory ecosia search there isn't an English dub. Do you know of any good fansubs (or official subs?)

I'll add that to my list; thank you.

Ooh, thanks, that's pretty new for the keyboard to be falling apart that much, good to know! (I'm laptop shopping after my current one is failing all over for me and it's amazing how hard this kind of info is to get from the review sites.)

HP notebook from early 2020.

The battery life started dropping fast when it was about six months old, and I haven't been able to use it for more that a few minutes without plugging in for a couple years. Other than that it's held up pretty well. I opened it up to add more RAM earlier this year and while I wouldn't say it was easy to open the case, I didn't have to break anything, and replacing the RAM was a snap.

Unfortunately I'm afraid the video card is now failing, and as old as it is it probably makes more sense to get a whole new laptop than to just get a new video card. It's also started to have overheating problems (possibly related to the video card problems.)

Oh, also, one of the USB ports has had a loose connection for awhile, but it has three so that hasn't been a huge problem.

There were definitely English subs floating around at some point but I'm afraid that's the limit of my advice, sorry, I just watched the ones the person who showed it to me had.

I have an ASUS G17 / intel i7, and around the 2.5 year mark the wifi module failed (it could connect through Ethernet, and the wifi worked for other devices, just not this one). I purchased a small USB replacement which worked briefly, then I think I broke that, and got a different model. It now works fine, touch wood.

I'm typing this on a refurbished HP laptop I bought in 2017. It doesn't seem to have a snappy model name, but the listing is here:
https://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-15-6-intel-i3-1tb-laptops-4

In terms of hardware it's worked great all this time. I spilled tea on it a while back, and it wasn't too hard to take all the keyboard keys off, dry the computer out, and snap them back on (except the escape key, which I could never figure out how to reattach). Recently have I started to have a problem where the left shift key only works sometimes, but after six years, getting tea spilled on it, and being dropped several times (including breaking a corner off the plastic frame recently), I figure it's allowed.

So in conclusion, I'm now a big HP fan, and to replace it I've ordered a new HP that got good reviews on CNET.

MILK!!!

(Anonymous) 2023-12-04 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to see characters drinking milk. Not in any sort of sexual way, just drinking good ol' milk because milk is epic.

Please recommend me characters who like milk or show them drinking milk. Ice cream or yogurt is also okay. Basically anything dairy.

I haven't had the chance to try these yet, but I recently picked up Zero-Proof Cocktails by Liz Scott. Here are a few from that book:

Caipirinha Caprice

1/2 lime, diced
1/2 small lemon, diced
1/2 small orange, diced
1 muscovado or raw sugar cube
ginger beer
crushed ice
sugarcane swizzle stick, for garnish
mint sprig, for garnish

Put the diced citrus in a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with the sugar cube. Add a splash of the ginger beer and muddle until the citrus juices are released. Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice and top off with the ginger beer. Garnish with the sugarcane swizzle stick and mint sprig.

~~~
Mimosa Sunrise
1/2 cup orange juice, preferably freshly squeezed, well chilled
1 tablespoon apricot nectar, well chilled
1 teaspoon grenadine
1/3 cup club soda, well chilled
maraschino cherry, for garnish
In a wine glass or champagne flute, stir together the orange juice and apricot nectar, Carefully and slowly drip the grenadine down the inside edge of the glass so it settles on the bottom. Top with the club soda, without stirring, and serve garnished with the cherry.
~~~

A-pear-itif

1 1/3 cups pear nectar, well chilled
1 (750ml) bottle sparkling pear juice, well chilled
1 tablespoon pear-infused white balsamic vinegar
12 thin pear slices, for garnish

Combine the nectar, juice, and vinegar in a small pitcher and stir well. Divide among 4 wineglasses, and serve each garnished with 3 pear slices on a cocktail pick.

Yeah, I also wish I had known this. (The good news is that most of my keys randomly started working again this morning; just the "s" and "Delete" keys are giving me trouble today.)

I wonder if this is something common to CostCo laptops or if I'm just lucky, because the s (and w, x and 2) keys kept on randomly ceasing to work on my old Dell Inspiron 13 (it lasted me ~`4.5 years, and probably would've worked longer (aside from the keyboard) if I hadn't left it at 100% charge throughout the entire pandemic. Instead, it refuses to hold a charge or even turn on unless I hold the charging cable in a very specific position.)

This is a bit random, but if you're familiar with the Britpop band Oasis, Liam Gallagher drinks milk briefly in one of the music videos. I have no idea why! And it's followed by a weird x-ray shot of it going down his esophagus? Music videos, man.

I had a quick look on Youtube, and it looks like Homelander from The Boys drinks milk a lot, if you want to check those out.

I'm not sure this is 100% what you're looking for, but I really enjoyed Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy, for the process of starting with a small settlement on Mars and over a century or so terraforming it into a livable human space. There's stuff about building both physical infrastructure and civil/social infrastructure.

I do need to warn for some authorial racism, especially towards a Japanese character. Totally fair if that's a dealbreaker.

I'll try to look for them; thank you for the rec

Book or AO3 OW Recs

(Anonymous) 2023-12-05 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
For "litficcy" horror! If there's a relationship I'd prefer it to be F/F, but otherwise anything goes!

OFMD Recs

(Anonymous) 2023-12-05 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love some recs for fics less than 15k for the following pairings: Izzy/Lucius, Ed/Izzy, Ed/Izzy/Stede

I'm a fan of darker stories for this fandom. Happy endings are nice (not required though!) Thanks so much.

I would love a Lanfear icon, a character from Wheel of Time season 2.

As someone who has seen The Boys, I would note that Homelander's milk drinking definitely leans into a kinky/sexual space.
